For the well-being of your animal
Adopting an animal requires a lot of preparation. It is best to inform yourself about the characteristics, behaviour, housing, feeding and care your animal needs. As an experienced vet, I can give you a wealth of information. And I am not only talking about medical matters. Learn all the ways to make your pet as comfortable as possible so that you can enjoy each other's company to the fullest.
Your pet's health
This one is undoubtedly close to your heart. As such, it is important to know certain things in advance and keep a close eye on them:
Rabies vaccination is mandatory when bringing a companion animal from abroad into Belgium. Puppies receive this vaccine at a minimum of 12 weeks old and can only be brought across the border at 15 weeks old. This applies even when coming from the Netherlands. The vaccination and revaccination are recorded in a European passport which can be used to identify your pet.
Diabetes in dogs and cats is becoming increasingly common. It can lead to obesity, especially in cats. On the other hand, dogs and cats with diabetes can also continue to lose weight despite urinating, drinking and eating more often. A visit to the vet is then recommended: he or she can prescribe more exercise, an adapted diet or daily insulin injections.
Certain pedigree dogs are plagued by diseases specific to their breed. If you want to know what problems your dog might have, you can consult the Dog Breed Guide online, which lists breed-specific dog diseases.
Useful to know
You can contact me for a broad spectrum of routine examinations and treatments:
Do you have a litter of kittens and would like to sell them or give some of them away? Then consider having them spayed and chipped. This has been a legal requirement since 1 September 2014.
Every year, many dogs are reported lost or stolen. Popular breeds like Chihuahua, Jack Russell and Border Collie dogs disappear a lot. If you have a microchip fitted by your vet, your dog will be registered in the central DogID database. That chip records the dog's address and owner. Changes such as the death of the animal, relocation or change of owner must also be communicated for the update of the registration certificate.
Did you know?
A cat does not just smell through its nose
A cat has a pouch filled with liquid above its palate. That liquid can partially slide down its throat and also carries air with it. Thus, your cat perceives the smells that come with the air. Occasionally, they'll grimace and leave their mouth hanging half-open.
A cat door is scary for your cat
Cats prefer not to crawl out through the cat door but rather wait for the door to open. Cats have a strong hunting instinct and always remain on guard for possible dangers. Through a small cat door, cats cannot survey their surroundings. However, if you put some plants near the flap of the door, your cat can survey its territory from there.
Cats have great hearing
Cats hear much higher-pitched tones than humans. Moreover, they can move their ears separately and perceive different sounds at the same time. So, if your cat suddenly looks around wildly, it's catching sound from all sides.
